(1) PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
------------------------
MSCODE.exe is a complete menu driven "MORSE CODE MADE EASY" learning tool
that allows you to set the pace. The 3 major modes are LESSONS, PRACTICE
and WORD LIST. You can change the tone, number of words per minute, how
many characters are sent at a time and weather or not the characters are
displayed as they are sounded through the computer's speaker. The program
tracks your progress and displays a score based on level of difficulty
at the end of each lesson. "Use Ctrl key as telegraph key" is a reserved
option that is available when you register.
For a more complete program description see (13) PROGRAM MENU OPTIONS.
(2) DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE:
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details --
some request registration while others require it, some specify a
maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the
simple right to continue using the software to an updated program
with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution.
The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group.
For example, some authors require written permission before a
commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
(3) DISCLAIMER:
D I S C L A I M E R - A G R E E M E N T
Users of MsCode must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"MsCode is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties
of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes
no liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result
from the use of MsCode."
MsCode is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but
please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The
essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer
users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide
incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. If
you find this program useful and find that you are using MsCode and
continue to use MsCode after a reasonable trial period, you must make
a registration payment of $15 plus s/h and any sales tax that may apply,
to Brad's Software. The $15 registration fee will license one copy for
use on any one computer at any one time. You must treat this software
just like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
number of people and may be freely moved from one computer location to
another, so long as there is no possibility of it being used at one
location while it's being used at another. Just as a book cannot be
read by two different persons at the same time.
Commercial users of MsCode must register and pay for their copies
of MsCode within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting Brad's Software.
Anyone distributing MsCode for any kind of remuneration must first
contact Brad's Software at the address below for authorization.
This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors
recognized by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware
distributors, and such distributors may begin offering MsCode
immediately (However Brad's Software must still be advised so that
the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest version of
MsCode).
You are encouraged to pass a copy of MsCode along to your friends
for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if
they find that they can use it. All registered users will receive
a copy of the latest version of the MsCode system.
(4) LICENSE:
MSCODE is not and has never been public domain, nor is it free ware.
MSCODE is copyrighted by Ken Bradford and any unauthorized use
inconsistent with the terms of this license is an infringement of
the copyright.
MSCODE may be used without registration for 30 days for evaluation.
The use of MSCODE beyond the 30 days, requires registration.
See (14) REGISTRATION for registering the MSCODE software.
The use of unlicensed copies by any person, business, corporation,
government agency or any other entity is strictly prohibited. After
the 30 day evaluation period, you must either register the software
or erase it.
A single user license permits a user to use MSCODE only on a single
computer. A purchaser of a single user license may use the program on
different computers, but may not use the program on more than one
computer at a time.
Registration to a business name requires a SITE license.
See MsCode.reg "ORDER FORM" for fees.
No one may modify or patch the MSCODE executable files in any way,
including but not limited to decompiling, disassembling, or otherwise
reverse engineering the program.
A limited license is granted to copy and distribute MSCODE only for
the purpose of evaluation by others, subject to the above limitations,
and also the following:
MSCODE must be copied in unmodified form, complete with all accompanying
files, documentation, and this license.

(7) COPYRIGHT ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:
-------------------------------
WINDOWS is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.
MS-DOS is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.
QBASIC is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation.
IBM is a registered trademark of International Business
Machine Corporation.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(8) EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
-----------------------
IBM PC and most compatibles. DOS 3.0 or higher. 512K RAM required. A
enhanced 101 or 102 keyboard ( MsCode uses function keys F1 through F12 ).
A color monitor and a hard drive is recommended. Loading of data files is
slowed considerably if ran from a floppy drive. The main program will run
just fine from a floppy if you don't mind the slow data load.
(9) PROGRAM HISTORY:
--------------------
I am one of those people that can't remember the previous characters sent.
Way back in October of 1984,I developed a program for my own personal use
that ran on the TI 99/4A home computer. The program allowed me to select
and hear the characters sent as words. It became easy to learn once I quit
listening for individual dits and da's.
In 1986 I rewrote "MORSE CODE MADE EASY" to run on a TI PC. It had a TI
three color plain graphics board and was updated for IBM with a Hercules
CGA card. I still hadn't added the shareware screens or published MsCode
even then because there weren't that many TI PC's around and they were
switching to IBM motherboards .I bought a new 486/66 IBM compatible in
February 1993, started Brad's SoftWare and have been publishing some of
the software that I have written over the years.
One software package that I am proud of is "Texlotto", a complete Texas
Lottery Data Analyzer.
(10) REVISIONS:
--------------
VERSION 3.0 CHANGES:
--------------------
5/12/95 Added scrollable viewer option to view this documentation file,
the MORSE CODE table and the registration order form with print option.
Also added a option to allow user to re-run the MsCode Logo screen.
VERSION 3.1 CHANGES:
---------------------
8/26/95 Corrected bug that caused "SHOW SCORES" to double the number of
times a lesson had been taken.
VERSION 3.2 CHANGES:
---------------------
9/26/95 I have added a SPACE MULTIPLIER that allows you to increase the
space between characters without making the dit and dah longer. The WPM
will only be correct when the SPACE MULTIPLIER is set to 3 since the space
between characters is supposed to be the length of 3 dits.
VERSION 3.4 CHANGES:
---------------------
10/05/95 Added separate help file that you can scroll through with the
viewer and print out a copy if you wish.
Also added self registering feature that allows you to Add, Change and
Remove your "Name" and "Registration Number" so that the software can be
evaluated and registered by others.
VERSION 4.0 CHANGES:
---------------------
05/21/96 Registration now available through Compuserve required
documentation changes.
VERSION 4.1 CHANGES:
---------------------
09/24/96 Added "Use Ctrl key as telegraph key" as a reserved option.
(11) INSTALLATION:
-----------------
FROM FLOPPY:
Insert the disk into a floppy drive, type that drive letter followed by
a colon ":" and press enter.
Type INSTALL and press enter.
You will be asked which drive to install MsCode to. When you select a
drive, it will then create a MsCode directory on that drive and copy all
files to it and run the program. If you do not have a hard drive, it will
run the program from the floppy if you choose.
If you run MSCODE from a floppy, loading of data files will be slowed
considerably.
Once MSCODE has been installed or you have copied all the files to a
different directory, you will need to run MSCODE from that directory.
The program can not use the data files if you attempt to run MSCODE
from a different drive or directory unless you put the \MSCODE directory
in your autoexec.bat's path. The easy thing to do is set up a icon in
WINDOWS,but if you want to run MSCODE from the MS-DOS command line, you
can create a bat file to move to the correct drive and directory and
then run MSCODE.
FROM WINDOWS:
From WINDOWS, select File,Run and type D:\INSTALL ( replace the D: with
what ever floppy drive your disk is in.
After installation, you can select File,New,Program in Windows to set up
an icon. For program name type MSCODE. For command type MSCODE. For
working directory, type D:\MSCODE ( replace with your drive and directory
if different).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The software is completely menu driven, so all you have to do is follow
menu instructions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(13) PROGRAM MENU OPTIONS:
-------------------------
OPTION (1) LESSONS:
There are 27 lessons arranged from least to most difficult so that
the user can progress at a pace that they select. The user can change
the tone, number of words per minute, how many characters are sent at
a time and weather or not the characters are displayed as they are sent.
At the end of each lesson, the user is given a score based on the level
of difficulty for that lesson.
The scores in MsCode are only a guide to compare to your past performance
so that you can tell how much you have progressed and do not relate to
tests from other sources such as FCC exams.
OPTION (2) PRACTICE:
The practice sub menus are:
1. "HEAR WHAT YOU TYPE" which displays and sends what ever you type.
2. "TYPE WHAT YOU HEAR" which is the same as LESSONS except that you are
asked to enter a list of characters that you need practice on. The
program randomly sounds out the dits and dahs for the characters in
the practice list. At the end, the you are given a score based on
speed, number of characters sent at a time and the level of
difficulty, the same way that the lessons are scored.
3. "Use Ctrl key as telegraph key" is a reserved option that is available
for those who register. As you tap out code on the Ctrl key, the
dits and dahs are not only heard through the computers speaker, but
are also displayed along with the MORSE CODE that they represent.
OPTION (3) WORD TEST:
The user selects one of the 27 word lists that start with short easy
words to copy and graduate to longer harder words to copy. The user is
then asked to type the words as the dits and dahs for the characters in
the randomly selected words are sounded out. At the end, the user is
given a score based on speed, number of characters sent at a time and
the level of difficulty the same way that the lessons are scored.
OPTION (4) RUN LOGO SCREEN
Displays Logo screen that shows telegraph key sounding out the dits and
dahs as "MORSE CODE MADE EASY" is put on the screen in large letters.
OPTION (5) VIEW FILES
This option allows you to select viewer screen that scrolls up and
down that shows this documentation file, the Morse Code Table, the
HELP file or the registration order form.
The user can print out a copy of the file being viewed by pressing the
letter "P".
OPTION (6) REGISTRATION
This option allows you to:
1. Enter your registered name and number.
2. Change the registered name and number.
3. Remove the registered name and number.
4. View / Print Registration Order Form (MsCode.reg).
OPTION (7) HELP
